Due to the changes in the ACA most employers now have renewal dates of December or January and feel helpless to be able to consider options earlier.
In reality you are free to move your medical plan at any time and not locked into an annual contract. The downside of the year end renewals is there so many renewals getting any cooperation from the carriers is difficult which leads to enrollment problems.
The reason to consider a midyear change is that the rates recently released by several of the carriers are lower for a change. This may provide an opportunity to move your account on May 1st or June 1st if the rates are attractive.
The indication is that the rates will go up again in most cases for July 1st which will take away some of the incentive for change.
